Stigmas

"From time to time at elegant parties, I've been introduced to some young woman or other in a splendid dress and jewelry. When she learns I was once a geisha in Kyoto, she forms her mouth in a sort of smile, although the corners don't turn up quite as they should. She has no idea what to say!..... Well I often find myself wondering why she can't sense how much we really have in common. She is a kept woman, you see, and in my day, so was I."
~Memoirs of a Geisha

This is a perfect way for me to relate to the mainstream view women have of my career. Even women in my own extended family, full of conservative cultural values. Most women do not consider being with a successful man and being kept at home, as being a prostitute. But maybe it is? What is the difference?

Realizing the stigma of being a dancer is an important factor to take into account before starting this job. It is something that people will always judge you for(if you choose to be honest). Even if you are not honest, it will forever be a part of who you are.

The good, the bad, and the ugly forever shape you as an individual.

"I might just be my mother's child, but in all reality, I'm everybody's child. Nobody raised me; I was raised in this society."

  1. The only difference between a housewife & a prostitute is that one sells her body, the other sells her soul.
